Embedding Purpose in Early Talent Programmes
At this year’s NZAGE Summit, Talent Solutions and Contact Energy teamed up to deliver an interactive workshop on how organisational purpose can be woven into every stage of early talent delivery. Caleb Jasmat (Contact Energy) and Aron Chantelau (Talent Solutions) guided the room through practical examples, honest reflections, and plenty of group discussion on what it really takes to build a purpose-led programme.
Why Purpose Matters
Contact Energy’s commitment to leading Aotearoa’s decarbonisation is more than a strategy; it is a story that resonates deeply with graduates and interns. By grounding their programme in a clear mission, they have created an experience where early talent can see the real-world impact of their work. When purpose sits at the centre, attraction and retention become more authentic, more compelling, and far more aligned with what Gen Z value most.
What We Shared
Attraction
The team showed how consistent, purpose-led messaging across every channel brings the mission to life. Real stories from interns and graduates made it tangible, from work on renewable energy projects to monitoring eel populations as part of environmental initiatives. Communications were shaped around what matters to early talent, including climate action, wellbeing, and meaningful work.
Selection
Throughout the selection process, candidates were encouraged to reflect on how their values align with the organisation’s purpose. Hiring managers and assessors were trained to reinforce this consistently, and assessment centre exercises were grounded in genuine business challenges linked to decarbonisation.
Onboarding
Onboarding was designed around connection - to the cohort, to the business, and to each person’s role. Activities included hackathons, executive engagement sessions, and site tours to see purpose in action. Pre-boarding communications played a key role in reinforcing expectations and the organisation’s mission.
Development
Opportunities for graduates and interns to contribute to purpose-driven projects and community initiatives were woven throughout the programme. Successes linked to the organisation’s mission were celebrated, and a culture of open feedback supported continuous improvement.
An Interactive Workshop
The workshop itself was highly interactive. Participants explored their own programmes, brainstormed opportunities to strengthen purpose alignment, and shared practical ideas with the room. The energy was fantastic, with plenty of discussion as everyone reflected on what actions they could take forward into 2026.
Key Takeaway
Embedding purpose is not a one-off exercise. It is an ongoing journey that requires clarity, consistency, and genuine intent. By aligning every stage of the early talent experience with a clear and authentic mission, organisations can attract, engage, and retain graduates who want to make a meaningful difference.
